Shaylyn Trenkamp, Class of 2016
After Maquoketa Valley, I went on to attend University of Northern Iowa as an Elementary Education major with Spanish and Literacy minors. As a sophomore now, I still am just as determined and proud to follow the path to being a future educator as I was when I chose this profession! I've also been very active in student organizations at UNI, trying out the speech team and Camp Adventure, helping out as a part of Stop and Serve (a volunteer project-based committee), serving as Treasurer of Campbell Hall Senate (our residence hall association for programs and more), and joining the Student Elementary and Early Childhood Association as well as the Student Literacy Association. UNI does a fantastic job of providing opportunities upon opportunities for students, so I've also been attending conferences, singing the national anthem at UNI sporting events, and learning about other cultures and experiences. I plan to study abroad next summer and hopefully the following summer as well, which is just one of the many opportunities I can only consider because of the tremendous help I received from Maquoketa Valley Dollars for Scholars. I will forever be grateful for the scholarships I received from MVDFS, as they have made it possible for me to pursue many dreams - including obtaining two minors with my Elementary Education studies and studying abroad in multiple facets.

After high school, I attended Kirkwood Community College to major in Diagnostic Assisting with hopes of getting accepted into the Diagnostic Assistant program through the Mercy/ St. Luke's School of Radiologic Technology. After finishing the prerequisites, I got accepted into the program. I am currently finishing up my final semester of the two year program. I also am working at St. Luke's as a Patient Care Tech in the Women and Children's Center on the Pediatric and NICU unit.
The past 3 years of college have been some of the most challenging, but rewarding years in my life so far. I've learned how to balance different things such as attending school 40 hours a week, working, and spending time with friends and family. I am extremely happy with my decision to pursue radiology and am very excited to see what the future holds for me. Dollars For Scholars has played a major role in helping me get to this point. Its crazy to think that I graduated from Maquoketa Valley three years ago, but the scholarships that I received from Dollars For Scholars helped give me that push to come closer to achieving my goals. I am very thankful for the opportunities these scholarships gave me and am excited to see them continue to impact students' education each year. I am also grateful for the generosity of the supporters for DFS. Their dollars promote a variety of educational choices to help high school students make their dreams become reality.
